Internal Medicine Residency Requirements

The HCMC Internal Medicine Residency Program accepts first year residents who intend to complete three years of internal medicine residency training.

Those residents accepted into the program are guaranteed a position for the full three years barring the development of grounds for dismissal or non-renewal of contract. We anticipate ACGME Accreditation in early 2023. For July 2023, our program will offer 6 positions.

How to Apply

Applications will be accepted electronically by provided form in lieu of Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), until January 2023. All applications are reviewed, with a limited number of qualified applicants invited for an on-site interview. Candidates will be selected for interviews based on their ability to succeed in the program and their likelihood of contributing to the program’s goals. Criteria assessed during application review and interviews include the applicant’s patient care skills, medical knowledge, interpersonal skills, professionalism and ethics, capacity to conduct practice-based learning, and the ability to work with others in systems-based care.

The Internal Medicine Residency Program will make reasonable efforts to confirm that all the educational requirements for the M.D. and D.O. degrees of candidates have been completed prior to entry into the residency program.

Advanced-level and inter-program transfers are undertaken according to the requirements of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Policy

A. Applications will be accepted through ERAS and should include the following:

  1. Applicant’s curriculum vitae
  2. An official copy of the applicant diploma and medical school transcript
  3. Letters of recommendation, (3)
  4. USMLE CK/CS &/or COMLEX Scores 1, 2 and PE and 3 if applicable
  5. Personal Statement

B. Minimum Resident Qualifications: *Must meet one or more of the following graduation requirements to be eligible for appointment.

  1. Graduation from a medical school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or
  2. Graduation form a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) or
  3. Graduation from a medical school outside of the United States or Canada, and meeting one of the following additional qualifications:
    1. holds a currently-valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment; or
    2. holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States licensing jurisdiction in his or her current ACGME specialty/subspecialty program; or
    3. has graduated from a medical school outside the United States and has completed a **Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.
  4. Current Membership in the AOA, AAMC or ACP 5. Completion with a passing grade of USMLE CK/CS &/or COMLEX 1, 2 and PE/CS
