Breathe Easy During National Respiratory Therapist Week

Paris, TN – The week of October 20-26 is Respiratory Care Week, an annual event that recognizes the respiratory care profession and promotes awareness of lung health issues and practices.  Henry County Medical Center is proud to recognize our respiratory therapists during this week, and proud to highlight the contributions they make.

A respiratory therapist treats people who have breathing or cardiopulmonary problems. Among their patients are premature infants whose lungs are underdeveloped and children and adults who have lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis, asthma and COPD.

After interviewing and examining a patient, and upon consultation with a physician, he or she will develop a treatment plan. This plan may include removing mucus from a patient's lungs or inserting a ventilation tube into the patient's windpipe and connecting it to a machine that delivers oxygen.  A respiratory therapist also delivers emergency care to heart attack and drowning victims or to people in shock.

The Respiratory/Cardiopulmonary Department at Henry County Medical Center works closely with Pulmonologist, Susan Garwood, MD, offering studies for breathing issues.

“We are here to assist you when your doctor orders breathing tests or PFT’s to evaluate lung disease,” said Tony Fry, RRT and Director of Cardiopulmonary Services. “Sleep studies can pinpoint breathing problems during sleep such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea that can create and or aggravate chronic health problems such as hypertension, diabetes, COPD, and Cardiovascular disease.”

We are also proud to announce that the recent expansion of the Sleep Disorders Center is now complete.  The Sleep Disorders Center is located on the ground floor of the Henry County Medical Center, next to Cardiac Rehab.  The Center underwent an expansion from two to four beds to better meet the needs of our patients.  If you have any questions about sleep disorders or if you need a sleep study, please contact Fry, at 731-644-8274.  If you need to schedule a physician referred test, call 731-644-8486.  For more information on respiratory therapy or other cardiopulmonary services, please call 731-644-8273.
