Speech Therapy

Henry County Healthcare Center offers speech therapy to its rehabilitation patients.

Speech-Language Pathology is the study of disorders that affect a person’s speech, language, cognition, voice, and/or swallowing. Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) address people’s speech production, vocal production, swallowing difficulties and language needs.

Depending on the nature and severity of the disorder, common treatments may range from physical strengthening exercises, instructive or repetitive practice and drilling, audio-visual aids and introduction of strategies to facilitate functional communication.

Treatment for swallowing disorders may include diet change, swallowing strategies and education, targeted exercise for muscles used in swallowing and Neuro Muscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES). VitalStim is a technique using muscle stimulation to assist with swallowing disorders. VitalStim requires special certification and our speech therapist, Christy Dukes is certified in the technique and uses it regularly with our patients.
